Copy or Inspiration

Movies are considered to be the hub of creativity. The objective of the movie makers is to present the audience with their novel ideas and create a frame by frame motion of their thoughts on the celluloid. But, what if the main objective is lost and the purpose becomes only to make business by giving the best, which was already proved somewhere else. Unfortunately, this copying is happening in the name of inspiration.

Inspiration, the most common word being used by all the copy masters of the movie world. Lifting from either old hit movies or any foreign movies has been a regular habit of the movie makers. It is good to serve the regional audience with the international standards but how ethical is it to take the credit of some others work. Who is to be blamed for this? The music directors, who actually lift the songs or the directors who approve those tunes in their movies.

Before the release of a new movie, the entire crew pleads the audience not to encourage piracy. But unfortunately, they themselves are acting pirates by lifting tunes. Piracy, no doubt should be strictly monitored, but then how about being stringent on the copy issue. The copyrights act commission should be more vigilant on this issue and make sure that the audience are getting what they are entitled to. They should make sure that there is a minimum of copying and if at all copied the original creator should duly get his credit. This move can encourage the new talent to come up with novel ideas as the people who depend on others for their growth would be stripped off their luxury.

Finally, if the piracy has to be stopped why shouldn't it start at the doorstep of the cinema rather than when it is out on the streets. Directors and Music directors should move in a way forward to meet the actual objective of making a movie i.e., unleashing the creativity. We, spectators, demand a movie or music which can showcase the talent and creativity not the copying ability.

This is my second article in print.

My first article in print media

I came home after a tiring day of my work routine. Freshened up. Opened my favorite thing, my lappy, visited the regular websites I check. Gmail, Orkut, Idlebrain...whoa...I saw my name in the review section. Today, 21 June 2010, I got one of the rare surprises anyone can get. It is not a surprise per se, but I was surprised. My review on the movie "Vedam" was published in one of the telugu film websites "Idlebrain".

I've sent my review few days back to Idlebrain and I completely forgot about that. I thought it was not going to be published since the director of the movie Krish had already posted his Postmortem on the movie. But, much to my glee it was published, though along with many others. It was nice to see my writing in a public website getting approved. The whole thing behind this happiness is not about getting my review published but achieving what I wanted.

The other thing about my review is the common point I found in my review and in Krish's Postmortem. I somehow felt that the 5 characters in the movie were related to the 5 elements of nature. Then, a couple of days later Krish confirmed this thought of mine, when he posted his postmortem in the same website. The difference being the assigning of the characters. But, still that analysis of mine being proved correct made me feel ecstatic.

Usually, surprises are given by others, but, this surprise was given by no one but still it was a surprise. My roomie told me that one of his friends, who happens to know me, called him and told him about this review. Good that some one knew before I told. Well, this is my first article in press. I hope in future more will be published.

The following is the link for my review.

Vedam ~ A Journey of Emotions.

A new trend in the conventional stream of Telugu movies. A new dimension added to the very orthodox film making style in tollywood. A new ray of hope has started to lighten up in the minds of the audience who have made up their minds with what a telugu movie can give to them. The reason for all these is one movie "Vedam". An honest and sincere attempt by the director "Krish".

This movie has five stories amalgamated into one story. Five stories of five characters, where every character is a protagonist in its own way. The five characters in this movie represents the five elements of the nature.

Vivek (Manoj Manchu) - The Rock star. Aiming for "The sky". He wants to meet the highest standards but in his own way, not in the tradition followed by his family.

Saroja (Anushka) - The Prostitute. "The fire" within. She has the fire, can attract anyone and wants to lead her own life in her own way, not under the remote control of anyone.

Ramulu (Nagayya) - The poor man. He has the patience of "The earth". Still and calm. He wants to give his grandkid the education which he and his family was deprived off. In that process he bears all the "pains" with patience.

Raheem Khureshi (Manoj Bajpai) - The non terrorist Muslim branded as terrorist. As calm and as serene as "The water". But when situation arises he can erupt as a flood or even a tsunami.

Cable Raju (Allu Arjun) - The floater. His attitude is as flexible and as inconsistent as "The air". He wants to become rich in a easy way but cannot shed off his real attitude when the clock strikes.

The life style of all these five characters, how they deal with the situations they face, how they want to overcome their difficulties was dealt in a near perfect way in Vedam. Kudos to the director for handling them very well.

The performances were equally good by all the artistes. Allu Arjun, Manoj Manchu, Manoj Bajpai, Anushka and the old man Ramulu have to be commended for their impeccable performances.

The only glitches in the movie being the handling of the screenplay in some parts of the movie. This type of movie needs a perfect screenplay to bring all the characters in one line at a point of time in the story. Here, in Vedam it somehow appears that the characters Saroja and Vivek have been forced to join with the rest of the crew. But keeping in view of the time line of the movie this can be overlooked.

Nevertheless, an honest and sincere attempt which needs to be appreciated.

Rajneeti - A Political Mahabharat

Rajneeti, the movie which I was waiting since the day I watched the trailor a few months back. With a lot of expectations, boasting of a huge star cast this movie got released finally.

The plot of the movie is basically drawn from the great mythological story of "Mahabharat". Rajneeti revolves around the politics, for a change not inter party politics but intra party politics. The film showcases the power greedy politicians coming from a single family, their attempts, plots and sketches to over power their opponents to get into the big seat.

The director tried to match the different characters of the movie with the characters of Mahabharat. Though he was successful in matching up the attitudes but he fails in the execution, as every other scene seems to be easily predictable. The characters play their part well and the actors gave their full potential.

Prakash Jha, also tried to do a God Father in the movie which kind of went well with the screenplay. But, coming from the director of movies like Gangajal and Apaharan, this movie can be said as a disappointment in terms of novelty and creativity.

Ranbir Kapoor steals the show. He has the major role in the movie and for a guy with a image of lover boy, it is a commendable work. He played the role to near perfection with nice variation in his historinics in intense and romantic scenes. Nana Patekar was adequate, Ajay Devgan under utilized, Manoj Bajpai subtle, and Arjun Rampal asusual except for a very pathetically done imitation of Heath "The Joker" ledger.

Katrina did well in the limited space. Audience will be disappointed to see her for only few minutes in the most spoken Political Attire. Rest of the cast including Nasseruddin Shaw fills the space.

Overall, This movie is a political recipe made with age old spices which never lose their spice if mixed in right proportions.
